Despite the fact that the number of electric vehicles and charging stations is growing, motorists still have a number of doubts about whether to buy an electric car with our winters. What will you have to face? What are the features of operation? Malanka prepared the most exciting questions and asked them to the drivers of the trains.

Is there a difference between a car with an internal combustion engine and an electric car in winter?

Anatoly, owner of the Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive: “Yes, I changed the diesel engine to this miracle of technology and I don’t regret it. When buying an electric car, immediately be prepared for the fact that the range in summer and winter is different. My car now has a range of 160 kilometers, it’s minus 15 degrees outside. In summer, the cruising range is 180-190 kilometers. Also, the speed of fast charging decreases slightly: in the summer I stand for 25-30 minutes (80-100 kilometers), now it’s 30-35 minutes, but, to be honest, I don’t really feel it: at this time I usually go to the hypermarket with my wife. What pleases: no need to fill in the “Arktika” (diesel), warm up the car, it works like a power tool: you press the button and the car is ready for any mode of operation at any temperature. For me, the disadvantages that I mentioned at the beginning are not felt when you realize that you can travel for a week for 20 rubles, while driving an ordinary car you spent 40-50 rubles“.

How does the battery behave in sub-zero temperatures? Has it ever happened when an electric car turned off from the cold?

Sergey, owner of BMW I3: “Does it turn off like an iPhone in the cold? No, there were no such cases, and it is hardly possible: the battery is heated up. But there was a case, I left the car under the house for a week, with a small power reserve, and when I returned, the battery lost 3-5%, but then it was minus 20-25, it was lucky that the charging station was located nearby. So I would have to go on business on deer“.

Is the operation of an electric car in winter, taking into account the increased consumption of electricity, still profitable, even in comparison with fuel analogues?

Oleg, the owner of the Nissan Leaf: “Yes, when traveling by car with an internal combustion engine, it took 120-150 rubles a month, and by an electric car, I throw 60-80 rubles a month. I spend twice as much. But depending on the mileage and the operation of some functions of an electric vehicle, in comparison with a car on an internal combustion engine, the savings are even greater. On average, the difference between driving in summer and winter is 10 rubles, including heating“.

Features in driving electric vehicles in winter?

Georgy, owner of the Nissan Leaf: “To control the movement, the car has standard chips, just like in cars with internal combustion engines. The handling of an electric car is better than a car with an internal combustion engine, that’s a fact. Road grip is also better, as electric cars are heavier than their ICE counterparts and have a lower center of gravity. I’ve never gotten stuck yet, although it depends on the situation… But here, like with a jeep, if you’re already in it, then it will be more difficult to get out“.

How long does a car warm up before driving?

Vitaliy, owner of the Nissan Leaf: “I don’t heat it at all, if compared with a car, the interior warms up faster. I sat down and drove off, after 1-2 minutes, after switching on, hot air enters the cabin. You do not expect the main units (ICE, gearbox, etc.) to warm up. The new electric trains provide remote control of interior heating. I bought it for $10,000, got functionality that is not in a car with a price of $20,000-25,000“.

Do you experience discomfort when charging an electric car in winter?

Vyacheslav, owner of the BMW I3: “There were unpleasant moments when I arrived at the charging station in a discharged car, and the parking spaces were occupied by cars with internal combustion engines, it seems that we have a lot of gas stations, but half of the stations can simply not be counted because of some egoists who it’s hard to think about the owners of electric vehicles, fortunately, the cable at the stations is long, you can somehow reach it. We need to convey to the owners of ordinary cars that for us this is not just a parking space, but an electric car charging station“.

And in order to feel protected this winter, Malanka has prepared 4 tips for electric motorists:

1. Keep silicone grease in the car, apply to the connector, glass edges and locks, the grease will prevent freezing;

2. Install applications for remote start of an electric car;

3. Before charging, warm up the battery (drive in dynamic mode), then the charging session will go with more power;

4. Calculate in advance the route with a small margin to the destination or to the EFS station, with the calculation of additional consumption and a decrease in the driving range of the car.

Sometimes situations arise that baffle even the most experienced electric car driver. In case of problems or another emergency situation, you should contact the Malanka support service (works around the clock and seven days a week).
